Let’s talk about Why Worms Matter.
For over 40 years, Charles Darwin studied earthworms and concluded that no other creature has played such an important role in shaping the surface of the Earth. His research showed that worms build fertile soil, recycle nutrients, and support the ecosystems we depend on.
At Red’s Worm Farm, we continue that legacy. Our worms transform food waste into nutrient‑rich vermicast and VermiExtract — natural fertilisers that restore soil health, improve plant growth, and support a circular, regenerative future.
A modern take on Darwin’s most practical science
Darwin’s final book focused not on exotic animals, but on the humble earthworm — a creature he believed was central to the future of agriculture. Today, his insights guide our mission.
We use worms to:
- Rebuild soil fertility
- Reduce food waste
- Support regenerative farming
- Produce natural, chemical‑free fertilisers
- Strengthen local ecosystems
Our work is rooted in the same principles Darwin uncovered: healthy soil, thriving worms, and a resilient natural world.

Schools Programme Section
Inspired by Darwin. Powered by nature.
Our school programme brings Darwin’s discoveries to life. Students explore worm behaviour, soil formation, decomposition, and sustainability through hands‑on experiments using their own mini worm farms.
By observing worms up close, children learn the same lessons Darwin uncovered:
- Worms are intelligent, responsive creatures
- They are essential to healthy soil
- They drive decomposition and nutrient cycling
- They are key allies in tackling climate and waste challenges
We donate a worm farm to every participating school, helping the next generation understand — and protect — the living systems beneath their feet.

Vermicast & VermiExtract
Darwin showed that worm castings are richer in nutrients, beneficial microbes, and plant‑available minerals than ordinary soil. Modern research confirms it.
Our vermicast and VermiExtract are produced using a continuous‑flow vermicomposting system that mirrors the natural processes Darwin described. The result is a premium, biologically active fertiliser that improves soil structure, boosts plant health, and supports long‑term regeneration.
